Description:
A graduated ND filter is necessary when you are photographing a scene with large differences in brightness. One half of the filter is grey the other half is clear. The grey part runs smoothly into the clear part. Bright parts of an image are darkened by the grey part of the filter. That way the subject can be properly exposed so that the bright portion doesn't look washed-out. The contrast of the bright part is heightened. The colour reproduction is not affected.

It is ideal for landscape shots where the sky is very bright. Without a filter you either expose the sky leading to a very dark ground or you exposure the ground making the sky overly bright. A graduated neutral density filter creates a smooth exposure. In addition the darkened part is richer in detail.

Example: When shooting a picture of a landscape the grey part of the filter has to cover the bright sky. Then you choose the proper exposure setting for the ground. Without the filter the sky would be overexposed. With the filter the sky looks darker so that the objects in contact with the sky appear more clearly and sharper.

The graduated ND filter is equipped with a rotatable metal frame with an addtional front thread where other filters, converters or a lens hood can be screwed on.
