This camera rail allows you to shift the camera steplessly into two directions. That easens e.g. manual focussing in macro photography where the depth of field is very small what makes freehand focussing usually very difficult. Mounted crossways you can also use the camera rail for stereo photography.

The camera rail can be attached to almost any tripod or ball head that has an 1/4" screw. It provides a second connecting screw for attaching an unleashed flash or a second camera for taking stereo pictures of moving objects. You can even combine two of these camera rails to make a cross camera rail.
