This parabolic reflector for studio lights offers a much better light spread and efficiency than most conventional light formers.

The reflector is separated into 16 segments what gives it the shape of a parabolic bowl. That is why the light cone is more concentrated and less lossy than the light cone of a common studio umbrella.

The gap between the light source and the reflector has an effect on the light spread. If the reflector is close to the light source, the light cone is wide and creates a smooth illumination. If the reflector is far from the light source, the light cone is narrow and more like a spot light. By shifting (focussing) the reflector in the umbrella holder of the studio flash you can adjust the light spread steplessly.
